The greatest Yemeni artistic masterpiece is an ancient artifact dating back to the mid-8th century BC, which is the shield of King Wahid'il Bayan, one of the rulers of a specific region. This shield, made of pure gold, is considered a magnificent and unique artistic masterpiece due to its historical value, which is multiples of its gold weight.
From the perspective of Yemeni cultural heritage, this engraving portrays an authentic depiction of the extraordinary creativity in ancient Yemeni art and ornamentation. This is evident in the decorations and drawings on the right and left margins of the engraving, resembling Assyrian figures seen in various ancient Yemeni paintings.
Moreover, the inscription on the shield consists of three clear lines written in ancient script, expressing unique engraving that combines many wonderful elements and features, illustrating the unity of cultural and civilizational heritage and the leading role of trade, competition, and cooperation among the ancient city-states to control resources.
Regarding trade, the inscription mentions trade missions from Yemen to northern Arabia, with one of these missions led by Sibaham bin Mashfaq, the owner of this inscription. These missions, approximately 14 in number, highlight the extensive spread of Yemeni trade and document the trade missions that reached several cities in northern Arabia during the reign of King Yada'el Bayan, including the regions or cities mentioned such as Dhakran, Wahian, Abas, and Hanak.
In conclusion, Yemen, with all its historical richness, breathes civilization and it is our duty to preserve this historical heritage. Yemen is one of the oldest civilizations in the world, and it is not appropriate to bombard archaeological sites, as America recently did by bombing a fortress built before 600 BC.
